With more than a decade of experience in education, Principal Brett Smith brings a student-centered and relationship-driven approach to school leadership. Since 2020, he has served as Principal of Island City Elementary in the La Grande School District. During his tenure, he has led efforts to improve student attendance, academic achievement, and built a strong staff of educators who serve the community. During this time he has coordinated major fundraising and facility improvement projects that have strengthened opportunities for students and families.

Prior to joining Island City Elementary, Mr. Smith served as Assistant Principal at both La Grande High School and Waller High School in Texas. His leadership experience includes professional development planning, instructional supervision, student services coordination, school safety initiatives, and district-wide committee leadership. He has also played a key role in developing systems to support student wellness, including district suicide prevention planning and community social service partnerships.

Before moving into administration, Mr. Smith taught Spanish and Health at the high school level in Texas and worked as an ESL instructor, helping students from diverse cultural and language backgrounds succeed. His passion for education is rooted in building strong relationships and creating inclusive learning environments where every student can thrive. He earned his teaching degree through Brigham Young University and his administrative credentials through Lamar University and the University of Oregon. 

In addition to his work in schools, Mr. Smith has an extensive coaching background in football, baseball, and youth sports. He has coached athletes ranging from elementary students to high school varsity programs and believes athletics provide valuable opportunities to teach leadership, perseverance, teamwork, and accountability. Through coaching, he has worked closely with youth and families to build confidence, encourage positive decision-making, and help students develop skills that extend far beyond sports. Whether in the classroom, school building, or on the field, Mr. Smith is passionate about helping young people grow into successful and well-rounded individuals.
