Explore Science Club is coming to Island City School!

GO STEM (Greater Oregon Science Technology Engineering & Math)

Explore science after school is a fun, hands-on setting with local scientists.  You’ll learn about things like drones from an information technology manager, map making from a geographer, fish habitat from fisheries biologists and about bat adaptations from a wildlife biologist.

-- The number of participants will be limited to 15, so sign up quickly!

-- All sessions will be held at Island City School, on Wednesdays from 2:45 - 4:30

-- GO STEM will provide snacks.

Explore Science After School Schedule:

January 22, 2020  - Connar Stone, IT Manager for Grande Ronde Model Watershed (GRMW) - Orient students to mapping techniques with the use of drones.  Map the school grounds, make a drone flight plan, explore with toy versions of drones, and use GO STEM robots.

January 29, 2020  - Continue with Connar

February 5, 2020  - Bridgett Naylor, Forest Service Geographer for Pacific NW Research Station - Learn map reading to develop awareness of surroundings and connection to local landscape.  Use “sandbox” to explore how topography and watershed are connected.

February 12, 2020  - Continue with Bridgett and include Sarah Brandy, Forest Service Fisheries Biologist - Manipulate “sandbox” for beneficial salmon habitat.

February 19, 2020  - Sarah Brandy and Kayla Morinaga, GRMW Monitoring Network Coordinator - Increase awareness of healthy aquatic habitats and stream tables, and possibly bring in macroinvertebrates.

February 26, 2020  - Continue with Kayla

March 4, 2020  - Laura Navarrete, Forest Service Wildlife Biologist - Explore food webs from a bat and bird’s eye view.  Explore bat adaptations, Anabat echolocation detection devices, echolocation software and possibly construct a bat house and bird feeder.

March 11, 2020  - Continue with Laura
